The short answer
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets an AI assistant like Claude call outside tools: your ad account, your analytics, a competitor ad database. Amazon Ads (February 2026) and Meta (April 2026) both opened MCP servers to advertisers this year. For marketers the change is simple: the assistant pulls live data instead of working from whatever you pasted, so a question like which hooks reach the top tier among 2,443 winning ads gets answered from the data itself.
MCP in plain English
An AI assistant on its own only knows what it was trained on and what you type into the chat. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the standard way to give it more: a list of tools it can call, each one connected to a real system.
You ask "which of my ad sets had rising CPA this week?" and the assistant, instead of guessing, calls a reporting tool on your ad account, reads the result and answers. You ask "show me the competitor ads in my niche that have run 90+ days" and it calls a search tool on an ad database.
Three parts, three words worth knowing:
| Term | What it is | Marketing example |
|---|---|---|
| Client | The AI app you talk to | Claude Desktop, claude.ai, Claude Code |
| Server | The connector a provider runs | Meta Ads, Amazon Ads, Ad Radar |
| Tool | One action the server exposes | "get insights", "search ads", "create campaign" |
The client reads each tool's description, decides which ones to call and in what order, and stitches the results into an answer. You don't write queries. You ask questions.
Where it came from, and why it matters that it's open
Anthropic introduced MCP in November 2024 as an open standard. A year later, on December 9, 2025, it donated the protocol to the Agentic AI Foundation, a directed fund under the Linux Foundation co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI. At that point, by Anthropic's count, there were more than 10,000 active public MCP servers, and the protocol had been adopted by ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and VS Code.
For a marketer the governance detail has one practical consequence: a connector built once works across assistants. If your agency uses Claude and your client uses ChatGPT, the same Amazon Ads or Meta server can serve both.
The ad platforms that shipped MCP servers
The interesting part of 2026 is that the platforms themselves moved.
| Date | Platform | What shipped | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct 2025 | Google Ads | Open-source MCP server, read-only in its current release | Developers with API access |
| Feb 2, 2026 | Amazon Ads | MCP Server in open beta | Amazon Ads API partners |
| Apr 29, 2026 | Meta | Ads AI Connectors: hosted MCP server plus CLI, open beta (PPC Land) | Advertisers, sign in with Facebook Business |
Amazon describes its server as "a translation layer that turns natural language prompts into structured API calls", usable from Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. Meta's covers reporting, campaign creation and editing, catalogs and signal diagnostics. Google's is the cautious one: it reads data, it can't change bids or pause campaigns, and Google's developer documentation points users to community support.
The direction is clear even if the products are early. Your own ad account is becoming something an assistant can read and, with permission, act on. For what that means in practice, and where it still breaks, see agentic marketing in 2026.
What changes in a Meta ads workflow
Before MCP, using an AI assistant for ads meant exporting a CSV, pasting it, asking a question, and repeating the whole loop next week. The assistant was a smart reader of stale copies.
| Job | Before MCP | With MCP |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly performance note | Export, paste, prompt | Ask; the assistant pulls the week |
| Competitor research | Screenshot Ad Library, paste copy | Assistant searches an ad database by tag or text |
| Hook analysis | Read 40 scripts yourself | Assistant fetches transcripts and groups them |
| Brief | Write from memory of what's working | Assistant grounds the brief in specific ads |
| Launch | Manual in Ads Manager | Possible via platform server, with approval |
The middle three rows are where most creative teams feel it first, because they depend on data that lives outside your account: what other brands are spending on.
What an ad research MCP server returns
Your account tells you what worked for you. It can't tell you what is working for the 749 other brands on our board. That's the gap the Ad Radar MCP server fills. It exposes six tools:
- search_ads: search winning Meta ads by text (headline, body, transcript), niche, tags, format, days live.
- get_ad: the full record for one ad, with transcript, tags, estimated spend and days live.
- winning_patterns: which tag values reach the top tier more often than average.
- advertiser_hooks: the hooks and angles one brand uses across all its ads.
- get_swipe_prompt: a ready prompt to adapt one ad's structure to your product.
- list_taxonomy: the valid tag values, so Claude filters correctly.
Here is the kind of answer winning_patterns makes possible. Across the 2,443 ads on the board on October 9, 2026, about 10% sit in the top tier (top 10% by winner score, live 21+ days). Some choices beat that rate, some fall below it.
| Tag | Ads | Share reaching top tier |
|---|---|---|
| Contrarian Reveal (hook mechanism) | 32 | 21.9% |
| Strong proof | 104 | 16.3% |
| Cautionary Tale (angle) | 129 | 14.0% |
| Specific-Number Opener | 411 | 12.9% |
| Question Opener | 366 | 7.1% |
| AI-generated (production format) | 77 | 2.6% |
The contrarian row is a small sample, so read it as a lead to check, not a rule. The point is that an assistant can hand you this table and the ads behind every row in one turn.

Two above-average tags in one ad: a number opener and a cautionary tale. When Claude reports a pattern, ask for an ad like this one as evidence, with spend and days attached.
A full working session with these tools, from first search to finished swipe, is in competitor ad research inside Claude.
The limits worth knowing
MCP connects the assistant to data. It doesn't make the data right or the assistant careful.
- Write access is real access. A server that can create campaigns can create the wrong one. Start read-only, and keep budget and status changes behind a confirmation step.
- Outside text is data, not instructions. Competitor ad copy, comments and web pages can contain text that looks like a command. A well-built client treats it as content. Check what your setup does.
- Estimates stay estimates. Ad Radar's spend figures are modeled from public Ad Library engagement over time. They are good for ranking ads against each other, not for an exact dollar number, and an assistant quoting them should say "estimated".
- Tool descriptions steer behavior. The assistant decides what to call based on how each tool is described. If answers look off, ask it which tools it called and with what filters.
How to start this week
Adding a hosted server to Claude Code is one command. This is the one for Ad Radar; other HTTP servers follow the same shape. In Claude Desktop or claude.ai you add the URL as a connector and sign in instead.
claude mcp add --transport http ad-radar https://app.ad-radar.dev/api/mcp
- Pick one question you answer every week by hand, like "what did competitors launch" or "which of our ads fatigued".
- Connect the one server that answers it, and nothing else yet.
- Ask the question, then ask Claude to show which tools it called and the raw rows it used. Check five of them by hand.
- Once the answers hold up, save the prompt. Our Claude prompts for Facebook ads and the media buyer's guide to Claude have prompts that assume this setup.
- Only then consider write access to an ad account, one account at a time.
Figures marked as estimated spend come from Ad Radar's model of engagement on public Meta Ad Library ads. They are estimates, labeled as such, and are best used to rank ads against each other.
