The short answer
Product demo ads are the longest-lasting format on our board. Ads shot as a product demo have a median of 173 days live, the most of any production format, and the 131 videos that demonstrate a mechanism carry a $259K median estimated spend. They work for devices and home goods. For supplements, where there is nothing to show working, they rarely reach the top tier.
Demo ads in numbers
We tag product demos in two ways on the Ad Radar board. Product demo is the production format: the video is shot as a demonstration. Demo of the mechanism is the video type: the ad shows how the product works, whatever the production style. They overlap on 40 ads.

demo-mechanism ads live more than a year
| Tag | Ads | Top-tier share | Median est. spend | Median days live |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product demo (production format) | 97 | 8.2% | $301K | 173 |
| Demo of the mechanism (video type) | 131 | 10.7% | $259K | 158 |
| Both tags | 40 | 10.0% | $474K | 202 |
| All video winners | 1,968 | 8.8% | $236K | 119 |
The standout is time. A demo doesn't age the way a trend, a joke or a news hook does. Ads with both tags, shot as a demo and built around the mechanism, have a median run of 202 days and a $474K median estimated spend. Eleven demo-mechanism ads have been running for more than two years. For the broader picture of ad longevity, see how long winning Facebook ads run.
The demo has to show something
The most useful split in this data is by product type. A demo works when the camera can see the result.
| Product form (demo-mechanism ads) | Ads | Top-tier share | Median est. spend |
|---|---|---|---|
| Topical | 9 | 22.2% | $276K |
| Apparel | 13 | 15.4% | $146K |
| Device | 29 | 10.3% | $245K |
| Home good | 14 | 7.1% | $296K |
| Supplement | 28 | 0% | $202K |
The samples under 20 are small, so the order among topicals, apparel and devices could shift. The supplement line is the clear one. Twenty-eight supplement ads use a demo-of-the-mechanism structure (animated pathways, glass-of-water experiments, diagrams), and none reaches the top tier. A supplement can't be filmed working. A rug that sheds a spill can.
Proof tells the same story. Demo-mechanism ads with unproven claims reach the top tier at 2.3% (1 of 43). Those with medium or strong proof reach 13 to 17%. In a demo, the demonstration is the proof. If it doesn't prove anything, the format has nothing left.

Show the problem being fixed in real time
Cabinet door broken?

- Days live
- 341
- Format
- Video, 55s

- 2
Three words, and the viewer with a sagging cabinet door is in. The rest is the fix, start to finish, in under a minute.
The hook names a problem the viewer can see in their own kitchen. The demo shows the repair. No claim needs to be believed because it happens on screen.
Let a user narrate the test
I got a new washable, spill-proof rug from Tumble for our kitchen.
- Est. spend
- $2.1M
- Days live
- 559
- Format
- Video, 46s
Live for 18 months. A first-person UGC-style demo: the owner sets up the rug, spills on it, wipes it clean. The product name is in the first sentence because the demo, not a twist, is the payoff.
A demo doesn't need a studio. Most demo winners combine a person with a real-world test, which is why 41 of the demo-mechanism ads are footage with a voiceover and 11 are UGC selfie videos.
Turn the demo into a reaction
Oh, no way!
- Est. spend
- $9.7M
- Days live
- 306
- Format
- Video, 48s
- Variants
- 2
The highest estimated spend among product demos and a top-tier ad. It opens on a reaction, then shows the smart chessboard tracking each move in an app.
The reaction opener does the job of the hook. The viewer wants to see what caused it, and the answer is the product working.
Demo a rescue
It's time to retrieve all those files you thought you lost.
- Est. spend
- $2.5M
- Days live
- 1442
- Format
- Video, 57s
A top-tier ad live for almost four years. The demo is a plug-in-and-recover sequence, and the promise in the first line is fulfilled on screen within the minute.
Who runs demo ads
Health brands make up 61 of the 131 demo-mechanism ads, followed by pets (19), home (15) and tools and DIY (6). The oldest product demo on the board, a drain gadget, has been running for more than seven years. Joints, cleaning and digestion are the leading niches. The cleaning niche is where demos are most natural: a stain, a smell or a clog is a problem the camera can show disappearing.
How demo ads open
Problem/Benefit Opener leads with 46 of the 131 demo-mechanism ads, followed by Specific Number Opener (20), First-Person Story (18) and Question Opener (17). The mechanism behind 95 of them is a problem-to-solution bridge. The pattern: show or name the problem, then show the fix.
Root cause is the leading angle (66 ads). That fits: a demo of the mechanism is a root-cause argument made visible. "Your rug stains because the fibers absorb. This one has a barrier. Watch."
Awareness spreads widely: unaware (45), solution-aware (33), problem-aware (33). A demo is one of the few formats that works across all three, because the viewer doesn't need to know anything to understand what they're seeing.
Where demo ads send traffic
Dedicated landing pages (40) and product pages (39) split the traffic evenly. A handful use listicles or advertorials. Because the demo already did the persuading, the page mostly needs to confirm the offer. If you run a demo to a product page, put the same demo near the top of that page. Our ad-to-landing message match guide covers why.
How to film a product demo ad
- Check that the result is visible. If you can't film the product working, pick another format. Supplements belong in founder-led or story formats.
- Open on the problem, not the product. A broken door, a stained rug, a dead laptop. Three to five seconds.
- Do the demo in one continuous shot if you can. Cuts make viewers suspect editing tricks. A single take is proof.
- Use a real setting. A kitchen, a garage, a living room floor. The setting tells the viewer "this could be your house."
- Keep it to 45 to 90 seconds. Production demos on our board have a median length of 68 seconds. The demo proves itself fast.
- Add a second proof after the demo. A number, a review, a side-by-side with the old way. Demo ads with medium or strong proof reach the top tier at 13 to 17%.
- Plan to run it for a long time. Demos are the format that ages slowest. Build variants around a winning demo with new hooks rather than reshooting.
